The effect of footwear on running performance and running economy in distance runners

Elevated joint loads during walking have been associated with the severity and progression of osteoarthritis (OA) of the knee. Footwear may have the potential to alter these loads. This study compared the effects of several common shoe types on knee loading in subjects with OA of the knee.

Overall, the clogs and stability shoes, resulted in a significantly higher peak knee adduction moment (3.1±0.7 and 3.0±0.7 %BW*ht, respectively, ~15% higher, p<0.05)) compared with that of flat walking shoes (2.8±0.7%BW*ht), flip-flops (2.7±0.8%BW*ht) and barefoot walking (2.7±0.7%BW*ht).

Thirty-five women, aged 65 to 93 years, were recruited from assisted living facilities and retirement communities.

This study was conducted to determine whether footwear affected performance on these tests in older women Functional Reach Test (FRT), Timed Up & Go Test (TUG), and 10-Meter Walk Test (TMW. the women moved fastest in walking shoes, slower barefooted, and slowest wearing dress shoes.

In conclusion football boots should be bought to fit the foot, the flex point of the footwear should be matched to the foot, and a boot with a similar volume to the foot should be selected. The appropriate medically supervised use of fitting aids and semi rigid sports orthoses will increase performance and reduce the risk of injury

Reported in the International Journal of Sports Medicine. Investigators from Germany had players perform complex turning movements (180°) while wearing studded and bladed boots. They also found that knee stress and unwanted movements were similar between the two types of cleat design. This lead the researchers to conclude that there no higher risk of knee joint injury wearing either style of cleat.
